NIACIN - Serious side effects but no benefit.

Jul 18, 2014

In the 2011 AIM trial and in the recent THRIVE trial niacin was associated with serious adverse affects but no cardiovascular benefit.  During four years of follow-up, of 26,000 patients, there was no difference in major cardiovascular events between the placebo group and the patients taking niacin. Adverse events with the niacin group included gastrointestinal, musculoskeletal, diabtes related and increased infections and bleeding.  The final evaluation strongly suggests the use of niacin to reduce cardiovascular events is not warranted.
