Fasting may not be required when checking your cholesterol level!

May 12, 2016

A recent review of the literature regarding fasting blood work for cholesterol revealed some interesting findings:

-Nonfasting levels showed insignificant changes compared to fasting.

-Nonfasting levels were more predictive of cardiovascular risk.

-If trigyceride levels are greater then 400 mg/dl then fasting levels for cholesterol should be obtained.

-Many clinical guidelines have shifted to nonfasting cholesterols over the last 5 years.
